Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, is an innovative and highly successful medical treatment. It has been used for some time in humans and is now gaining popularity in veterinary medicine as it has been found to produce the same benefits in animals as people.
We are delighted to be able to offer a specific form of stem cell therapy, known as adipose stem cell therapy, right here at our veterinary clinic in Evansville, IN.
Stem cells are the base cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Scientists are able to take stem cells from the body and trigger them to divide to form more cells. These new cells can either become stem cells themselves or become specialized cells with a specific function – for example brain cells, blood cells or bone cells. Stem cells are invaluable since no other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types.
Research has shown that stem cells have various functions, and they can be used to repair, maintain or enhance various tissues within the body. This is in contrast to many other treatments such as pain medications that do not deal with the root cause of the problem and instead simply mask the symptoms that your pet is experiencing. In pets, stem cell therapy is predominantly used to regenerate tissue, reduce inflammation and eliminate pain.
Adipose stem cell therapy is an in-clinic one-day procedure that enables your pet to receive their treatment in just one visit to our Evansville veterinary clinic. This is because we take stem cells from adipose tissue. Adipose stem cells are isolated from fat tissues and can be taken using a simple, minimally invasive process whilst your pet is under general anesthetic. Once the sample has been taken (usually from the fat either in the belly or behind the shoulder blades), the stem cells will be activated with an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and light stimulation. This increases the metabolic rate of the cells, making them significantly more likely to survive and be successful in helping to heal your pet once they are inserted back into their body in the desired location. Most animals will be able to return home the same day.
Adipose stem cell therapy, like all other types of stem cell therapy, is extremely safe. This is in part due to the fact that it uses your pet’s own body cells which will not be rejected. Our extremely highly trained and experienced staff undertake all aspects of the procedure, from collecting the adipose stem cells to preparing them and reinserting them into your pet. Your furbaby will then be closely monitored to ensure the success of the process.
After receiving stem cell therapy, pets are recommended to be kept quiet and resting for up to 10 days. This gives their bodies the best opportunity for the stem cells to heal. However, you are unlikely to see a significant improvement for at least 3-4 weeks as it takes this long for the cells to regenerate and repair. Once improvement is seen, this will continue for up to six months as the cells continue to regenerate, repair and heal your pet.
